About Pearly Hawker
Pearly Hawker is a brand created and designed by Mercedes Palmer-Higgins in her hometown of Colchester.
Founded on the idea that every piece should be a wearable story, her jewellery is made by hand and inspired by the realms of history, mythology, music and tales.
Pearly Hawker works to create jewellery that has a life of its own, filled with symbolism and meaning. Wearable, interesting and beautiful, it is her aim to make pieces that will hold a sense of wonder and awe as they are passed down.
Mercedes fell in love with wax carving at university but only really attempted to work with it in her final year, using wax to carve her final piece "The Silver Bride." Mixing her love of history, story telling and music, the silver bride was an attempt at making an ornate totem of survival.
Taking influence from Celtic & Viking knotwork, Beetles & the song Silver Bride by the band Amorphis.
It was after this, that Mercedes decided to work more in wax casting and further her ability in carving. Interning for Jewellers and working at a casters to further her knowledge in the world of jewellery designing and making.
The name Pearly Hawker originates from her wish to use her own history as inspiration for her Brand. With stories of Spanish Hawker ancestors and her great grandparents being Pearly Kings & Queen, it made sense that as the next in a long line of mad creatives she herself would be a Pearly Hawker.
Taking from her home towns history, her travels and other inspiration the pieces of Pearly Hawker have taken on a life of their own and made it a definite decision that any and all future work will never be seasonal. New designs will be created when the inspiration or idea is there. We will obviously sometimes tweak certain designs, adding stones or engraving that might fit randomly into certain seasons but that's not something we will ever concentrate on.
With a dedication to making beautiful designs using only good quality materials, Pearly Hawker concentrates on the design and craftsmanship of every piece made so that every order is just as special as the first.
Every piece is originally hand carved, so all the designs are sculptures in miniature telling stories to the world and the wearer. Taking form from inspirations such as historical events, mythological creatures and music for example, every piece takes time and gains a sense of power and presence.
Conservation & Charity
Mercedes is currently working on a collection that will donate towards conservations, trusts and charities. Inspired by her Great Grandfather & his brothers charity "The Fives", she wanted to create something that would allow her the ability and power to give back as well as help in areas that she feels passionate about. (This will vary from helping towards animals, to rebuilding the coral reefs, to helping towards sufferers of Alzheimers/Dementia.)
This will all be in the form of charms. Each charm will be designed around something geeky (in all honesty a lot of them will be inspired by video games) and will have its own conservation, trust or charity that it's dedicated to. To add to this, always arriving with your purchased charm will be information about the field it is dedicated to and how you can help further if you wish.
Eventually it is our hope to add a list here of all the available charities, conservation projects and trusts that we are donating to. So keep an eye out!

DESIGN & SUSTAINABILITY
Every piece of Pearly Hawker jewellery is handcarved by me to ensure its quality in design and look.
Each piece is designed, cast, polished and set in England.
Our packaging comes from the Tiny Box Company, which prides itself on being eco-friendly and sustainable. Using their recyclable packaging that we then stamp our logo on, we wrap every box in eco-friendly paper and tie them up with black and white twine before sending them out to their new homes.
We also recycle jewellery! I love when a client contacts us about a recycling opportunity. Jewellery should be personal to the wearer, but unfortunately sometimes what’s passed down isn’t what we ourselves enjoy wearing. I like to work with clients to completely redesign pieces, so that they can keep their beautiful treasure but wear it rather than let it sit in a corner forever collecting dust.
Eventually we would like to do more and it is our aim that Pearly Hawker will.
Keep watching this space though, as any future initiatives and projects will get listed here and explained in full!
