Spindle
Description
"...The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who know her. But, before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die."
The main focus of a curse, this is probably how many grow up now learning about spinning wheels. Well either sleeping beauty or the infamous Rumplestitskin, who uses a spinning wheel to spin straw into gold. Spindle is a ring based on this piece of folkish machinery. An item of history that has managed to cement itself in our lives through its magical uses within literature.
Historically before the industrial revolution the spinning wheel was fundamental to the textile industry, a tool for turning fibres into thread or yarn.
It was a common place piece of machinery in history which led to it being a solid element in literature. Sleeping beauty and rumplestiltskin would be the most popular examples of this. Here’s a few you may not know though:-
+ Habitrot – A Scottish folk tale about a spirit that teaches a girls husband to allow his bride not to spin.
+ The Golden Spinning Wheel – poem by Karel Jaromir Erben
+ Spinning Wheel Stories – not actually about spinning wheels but meant to be read while taking part in tedious acts such as spinning, this was written by Louisa May Alcott the author of Little Women (you may have seen the movie if not read her work)
